IPSCC Statement on Critical Race Theory

We, the IPS Community Coalition, support the national conversation on racism to recognize our nation’s moral reckoning with systemic racism, past and present. We commend the Indianapolis Public Schools district commitment to strive for racial equity and its recognition that Critical Race Theory is not taught in IPS (or any other K12 public schools that we know of). The use of the phrase Critical Race Theory to eliminate the discussion of racial history or oppression of people of color in our nation is a blatant example of racism in and of itself. And, to conflate discussion of racism with social emotional learning – learning that focuses on helping individuals to deal with their emotions and behaviors – is equally repugnant. Such scare tactics will not be tolerated in a democracy that values independence and civil liberties.
